The European future of Bosnia and Herzegovina is a priority for Bulgaria

16 July 2014 News

The European future of Bosnia and Herzegovina is a priority for Bulgaria and we expect the new European Commission to draw more attention to the development of the country. A serious discussion and specific measures with a clear time frame are necessary in order to address the problems, said Minister Kristian Vigenin at a meeting today at the MFA with Dr Valentin Inzko, High Representative of the international community in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Dr Inzko thanked for Bulgaria's support for the work of the High Representative of the international community in Bosnia and Herzegovina. He underlined the contribution of the Bulgarian military within the EU-led Althea operation.

Kristian Vigenin and Valentin Inzko shared concern at the stalemate in Bosnia and Herzegovina. They expressed hope that the political leadership of the country will find a new motivation for carrying out the necessary reforms in order to meet the legitimate expectations of the people for concrete results.

Fortunately, the protests earlier this year did not escalate, but they were a strong signal to all of us that we need to change something, the Foreign Minister said. Dr Inzko pointed out that the new EC and the new government in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which will be formed after the elections in October, provide an opportunity to reconsider the approach to the challenges faced by the country.

They also discussed the ongoing donors’ conference in support of Bosnia and Herzegovina after the floods. In addition to funding, we are ready to help in a way that is most efficient for the country, Minister Vigenin said.
