Kristian Vigenin: There are no last minute appointments at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

04 July 2014 News

There are no last minute appointments at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the issue is not controversial at all,  said Minister Kristian Vigenin on BNT.

Minister Vigenin explained the routine procedure for the reappointment of employees at the MFA during the annual rotation. Each year some overseas mandates end and the employees return to Bulgaria, while others are sent to work in the embassies. Those who return are relocated to the vacant places in the Foreign Ministry, he said.

The public may not be aware of this procedure, but I am surprised of the incompetence of the Foreign Affairs Committee members,  said Minister Vigenin. He expressed willingness to invite to the Ministry the MPs who are wrongly interpreting the situation. During this one year we’ve done a lot in order to make the work of the institution more transparent and professional, he said.

Kristian Vigenin answered questions related to the forthcoming nomination of a European  Commissioner from Bulgaria. According to him, it is necessary to hold consultations on the issue, as agreed at the Consultative Council for National Security at President Rosen Plevneliev. According to him, it is important to consider not only individuals but also to talk about ideas and policies to be advocated by the future Commissioner.

There are fundamental issues that we can agree on and only afterwards to discuss specific names, the Foreign Minister said. According to him, the best scenario is the major political parties to reach consensus and the Commissioner to be nominated  by the current legitimately elected government instead of a caretaker government.
