Minister Vigenin met with representatives of the Bulgarian national minority in Serbia

03 July 2014 News

Bulgaria and Serbia hold very active political dialogue in recent months. The Bulgarian national minority in the Republic of Serbia is also contributing to the friendship between the two nations, said Kristian Vigenin at today’s meeting with our compatriots in Belgrade.

Foreign Minister shared with the representatives of the Bulgarian national minority the results of today’s talks with his Serbian counterpart Ivica Dačić. I have received guarantees from the Serbian side that the issue of shortage of textbooks for teaching Bulgarian language is sought to be resolved as soon as possible before the start of the next school year, he said. Minister Vigenin said that the Bulgarian government is closely monitoring the treatment of minorities in Serbia and whether their rights are fully respected.

Earlier today Minister Vigenin laid a wreath on the memorial plaque of Vasil Levski and Georgi Sava Rakovski, which is located in the Tashmaydan park in the center of Belgrade. The ceremony was attended by diplomats from the Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria and representatives of the Bulgarian community in Serbia.

During the visit the Bulgarian delegation, led by Minister Kristian Vigenin, was also received by His Holiness Serbian Patriarch Irinej. Both sides appreciated the traditionally good relations between the two fraternal Orthodox churches.
