Minister Vigenin met with Cécilia Attias

28 March 2014 News

Minister Kristian Vigenin met with Cécilia Attias during her private visit to Bulgaria. She visited Sofia to meet again with the Bulgarian medics seven years after their release from Libyan prison.

Thank you for everything you have done for our nurses and Dr. Ashraf. You had a key role in the final phase of the negotiations for their return home after all this time of uncertainty, said Minister Vigenin. As a sign of appreciation for the efforts that led to the release of the medics, he presented to Ms Attias a medal of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

For her part, Cécilia Attias said that this is a very important part of her life and for her it was crucial to return to Bulgaria and see that they are well. "They deserve to be happy and have a new life. It is a joy to be a part of that happiness," she added.

Ms Attias said that even though 7 years ago the President of Bulgaria pardoned the medics, in Libya the capital punishment remains in force. Minister Vigenin pledged that the matter will be referred to the competent Libyan authorities and expressed hope to find a solution.

When I arrived in Sofia 7 years ago I only saw the airport, and now I am discovering what a wonderful country Bulgaria is. A country of tolerance where different ethnic groups live together, a country that saved its Jews during the Second World War, said Cécilia Attias. You deserve the world to know about what you have done, she added.
