Position of the MFA on the decision of the government of Ukraine to suspend preparations for signing the Association Agreement with the EU

22 November 2013 News

Bulgaria expresses disappointment with regard tothe decision of the government of Ukraine to suspend preparations for signing the Association Agreement with the EU, including the establishment of a Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA).

Bulgaria considers the Eastern Partnership as a clear long-term strategy for political association and economic integration of the Eastern European partner countries with the European Union, which will allow them to modernize by building institutions based on the rule of law, the civil society and the market economy. Of course, it is a sovereign right of each partner country, including Ukraine, to decide to what extent it would like to take advantage of this opportunity.

We still consider that the future of Ukraine, its freedom and prosperity, lies within the partnership and the close ties with the European Union.

We believe that it is still possible for the EU and Ukraine to take the necessary measures in order to make possible the signing of the Association Agreement in the near future.

Bulgaria will continue to put efforts in developing its relations with Ukraine, both bilaterally and within the European Union.
