UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon welcomed the Bulgarian delegation

Foreign Minister Kristian Vigenin participated in the meeting of the Bulgarian delegation with the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. The delegation, led by President Rosen Plevneliev, attended the General Debate of the 68th Session of the UN General Assembly. 

Previously Minister Vigenin visited the National Memorial, dedicated to the victims of the September 11 attacks in New York, and paid tribute to those killed in the terrorist attack. The memorial is located at the World Trade Centersite, on the former location of the Twin Towers. Near the Memorial, the final stage of the construction of the Freedom Tower skyscraper is underway. It is expected to be completed next year and to become the tallest building in the US.

On the occasion of Bulgarian Independence Day, Minister Vigenin visited the Bulgarian Eastern Orthodox Diocesan Cathedral “St. Cyril and Methodius”in Manhattan and talked with the priests and representatives of the Bulgarian immigrant community. The meeting continued at the Consulate General of Bulgaria with the participation of the President Rosen Plevneliev.

During the talks, the representatives of the Bulgarian community raised the question ofthe renewal of direct flight connection between Sofia and New York and Minister Vigenin made a commitment to examine the issue. According to him, currently the government takes the necessary steps for the abolition of US visa requirements and emphasized that during his meetings in Washington he has received positive signs in that direction.
