15 July 2013 News

Opportunities to strengthen economic co-operation between Bulgaria and Georgia were discussed at a meeting today between the Foreign Minister of Bulgaria, Kristian Vigenin, and the Prime Minister of Georgia, Bidzina Ivanishvili. Minister Vigenin is participating in the international conference "Georgia’s European Way: the EU Eastern Partnership with a view to the upcoming summit in Vilnius", held in Batumi, Georgia.

The level of economic co-operation does not match the political level and it is a priority for the two countries for it to be improved, it became clear during the conversation. Georgia has expressed its willingness to hold by the end of the year the fifth session of the Bulgarian-Georgian Intergovernmental Commission on trade and economic and scientific and technical cooperation. Prime Minister Ivanishvili expressed thanks for Bulgaria's support for Georgia on important issues, including the continuation of reforms in the country in connection with the European Union, political association and economic integration with the EU, as well as preparations for NATO membership.

The two also discussed the next steps in preparations for the summit on the Eastern Partnership in Vilnius in November. Kristian Vigenin expressed Bulgaria’s support for Georgia’s Association Agreement to be initialed in Vilnius.

They exchanged information on the political situations in the two countries. Prime Minister Ivanishvili expressed his congratulations on the election of Plamen Oresharski Prime Minister and wished his government success.

At the forum, Minister Kristian Vigenin met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Estonia, Urmas Paet, and the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Slovakia, Miroslav Lajcak.
