Minister Georg Georgiev Participates in the EU Foreign Affairs Council Meeting

The Bulgarian Foreign Minister, Georg Georgiev, took part today in the regular monthly meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council, held in Brussels.
As part of a packed agenda of the meeting, the foreign ministers discussed a number of key international issues, including Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, Syria, Iran, and EU-US relations.
During the exchange with the Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Andriy Sybiha, Minister Georgiev expressed Bulgaria's support for the results of the negotiations between the US and Ukraine in Jeddah, including the proposed ceasefire agreement and the resumption of intelligence-sharing and security assistance for Ukraine. The Bulgarian top diplomat emphasized the following points: peace in Ukraine must be lasting, just, and based on the UN Charter and international law. Bulgaria supports the inclusion of strong security guarantees for Ukraine in a future peace agreement.
The meeting continued with a discussion on the situation in the Middle East and the transition to the second phase of the agreement between Israel and Hamas, as well as the Arab plan for the reconstruction of Gaza. Minister Georgiev emphasized in his statement on the topic the need to provide humanitarian aid to the population in Gaza, as well as to ensure Israel's security.
The EU foreign ministers also discussed the situation in Syria after the latest waves of violence in some parts of the country. Minister Georg Georgiev expressed deep concern over the growing security risks in the country. He stressed the need to protect the civilian population and conduct a swift, transparent, and impartial investigation into the recent acts of violence. "The main goal must be to create a stable and inclusive political transition, led by Syrians under the auspices of the UN," said the Bulgarian top diplomat.
The Council discussed the EU's relations with Iran. The focus of the discussion was on sanctions, EU citizens detained for various reasons in the country, military support provided by Iran to Russia, the nuclear dossier, and the overall regional situation.
The European top diplomats exchanged views on EU-US relations. The Bulgarian Foreign Minister stressed the importance of strong transatlantic relations, which benefit both the EU and the US. He focused on the need to maintain a unified and coordinated EU policy towards the US. Minister Georgiev welcomed the commitment of the US President's administration to accelerate the end of the war in Ukraine and promote global peace and security.
