15 May 2024 News

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ivan Kondov held a meeting with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Republic of Bulgaria, Mr. Huseyn Huseynov.

The two diplomats discussed the upward development of the bilateral relations, a vivid expression of which is the Joint Declaration on strengthening the strategic partnership between the Republic of Bulgaria and the Republic of Azerbaijan, signed just a few days ago — on 8 May this year in Baku, during the official visit of the President of the Republic of Bulgaria, Rumen Radev, to the Republic of Azerbaijan at the invitation of the President of the country, Ilham Aliyev.

The talks confirmed the mutual interest in implementing projects in priority areas of cooperation such as energy and energy diversification, green policies, connectivity between Europe and Asia in its various dimensions — energy, transport, digital, people-to-people contacts.

The development of the Armenia—Azerbaijan settlement process and the role of the European Union and EU Member States in supporting confidence building were also discussed during the meeting. ‘The consistent and firm support of the Republic of Bulgaria for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of both the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Armenia remains unchanged. It is in Bulgaria's interest to achieve a lasting and sustainable peace in the South Caucasus and the wider Black Sea region. We welcome the positive steps by Azerbaijan and Armenia in settling the bilateral issues in Karabakh and would like the leaders of the two countries to continue on the same path of demonstrating political maturity and a bold vision for a peaceful and prosperous future, especially in the drastically changed geopolitical environment and European security architecture’, Deputy Minister Kondov said.

Opinions were also exchanged on bilateral projects in the context of cooperation between different cities and regions of Bulgaria and Azerbaijan.
