05 December 2023 News

The second annual session of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA), chaired by Croatia, was held in Zagreb from 27—30 November 2023.

The Bulgarian delegation was led by Mrs. Irena Dimitrova, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. In her speech in the plenary session, she highlighted the fight against anti-semitism as a priority in Bulgaria's human rights policy. She informed about the adoption in October 2023 of the National Action Plan for Combating Anti-Semitism for the period 2023—2027, as well as about the opening in September 2023 of a restored synagogue in Vidin, which is among the largest in the region of Southeast Europe. She pointed out that education and joint initiatives, including the commemoration of the Holocaust, are key to countering contemporary manifestations of anti-semitism. She gave the example of the cooperation between the Bulgarian Archives State Agency and the World Holocaust Remembrance Center ‘Yad Vashem’, as well as the projects of Sofia University ‘St. Kliment Ohridski’ and the Ministry of Education and Science. Deputy Minister Dimitrova supported the priorities, including countering disinformation, of the British Presidency, which starts in March 2024.

In the preparatory work of the session of the International Alliance from the Bulgarian side Assoc. Prof. Dr. Albena Taneva took part, she was appointed by the Ministry of Science and Education as a delegate in the ‘Academic’ task force.
