Representatives of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) took part in a meeting of the Inter-Ministerial Coordination Mechanism for Bulgaria's accession to the Organisation

07 April 2023 News

On 6 April 2023, a meeting of the permanent Inter-Ministerial Coordination Mechanism (ICM) for the accession of the Republic of Bulgaria to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) took place at the Council of Ministers building with the participation of a delegation from the Legal Directorate, which coordinates the process on behalf of the OECD.

The OECD representatives are on a three-day visit to the country, on the occasion of the presentation by the Secretary General of the Organization, Matthias Cormann, of the new Economic Survey of Bulgaria, on April 4, and to review the stage of the process of Bulgaria's accession to the OECD.

Deputy Minister Velislava Petrova, who chaired the meeting, highlighted the high level of cooperation between Bulgaria and the OECD Secretariat. Our country shares the values of the Organization and as an EU member state applies its standards to a high degree.

The participants reviewed the achievements of the ongoing technical reviews conducted by 25 OECD Thematic Committees. The OECD representatives expressed their readiness to support the Bulgarian institutions and explained the next stages that our country should pass in order to achieve full membership in the Organization. Both the Bulgarian administration and the OECD team in charge of coordination will endeavour to maximise synergies in the implementation of the reforms envisaged under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) and those needed to meet the OECD requirements.

The Bulgarian institutions were encouraged to actively participate in the OECD Working Bodies meetings, which will bring them the opportunity to draw on the expertise of all member countries and at the same time share our national views on key issues.

The ultimate goal of implementing and adhering to OECD policies and standards is not simply to achieve membership, but a higher standard of living for citizens and efficiency in administration.

Deputy Minister Petrova focused on Bulgaria's potential to add value and give our region a specific voice in the OECD in developing the best policies and standards for governance in all spheres of public, economic and political life.
