07 April 2023 News

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Velislava Petrova accepted copies of the credentials of the newly appointed Ambassador of the United States of America to the country, Kenneth Merten.

Both interlocutors discussed the opportunities for deepening the strategic partnership between Bulgaria and the United States in the context of the existing regional and global challenges. In the area of defence and security, emphasis was placed on joint efforts to identify potential solutions to sustain the capabilities of the Bulgarian Air Force.

The efforts of our country to achieve energy diversification through the commissioning of the Bulgaria-Greece interconnector were appreciated, as well as the actions taken to diversify the supply of nuclear fuel to the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant and the prospect of building new capacities.

Special attention was paid to the need to enhance connectivity and cooperation in the construction of transport infrastructure in the region along the North-South axis, as part of strengthening NATO's Eastern flank.

The process of Bulgaria's accession to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development was also discussed as a catalyst for the necessary internal reforms in the country and a positive signal to the other countries in the region.

Engagement with the US to advance the process of European integration of the Western Balkan countries on the basis of the established criteria and the agreements reached was also a focus of the meeting.

On Ukraine's reconstruction, the focus was on finding a sustainable approach to help the country's economic recovery, but without jeopardising trade ties in the region.

At the end of the talks, Deputy Minister Velislava Petrova wished Ambassador Merten success and expressed confidence in further deepening bilateral relations with the United States in all areas of mutual interest.
