Deputy Minister Velislava Petrova visited Iran to hold first in-depth political consultations since 2019

Political consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria and the Islamic Republic of Iran were held on May 22, 2022 in Tehran, Iran. On the Bulgarian side, the consultations were led by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Velislava Petrova, and on the Iranian side - by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran Ali Bagheri Kani.

During the talks with her Iranian counterpart, Velislava Petrova stressed Bulgaria's desire to strengthen practical cooperation with Iran in areas of mutual interest, referring to the traditionally good relations between the two nations and the 2022th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations in 2022.

The consultations reviewed bilateral relations, exchanged views on regional and global issues, incl. the situation in the context of the Russian military aggression in Ukraine and confirmed the importance of exchanging experiences on the reception of migrants and refugees. Emphasis was placed on the prospects and interest in cooperation in the field of transport connectivity and the development of the multimodal transport corridor "Persian Gulf - Black Sea". Deputy Minister Petrova stressed the long tradition of exchange in the fields of culture, sports, youth and tourism. He noted that the resumption of the FTA under Iran's nuclear program will have a direct positive impact on bilateral relations and opportunities to boost trade and economic co-operation in a number of areas of mutual interest. He also added that our country's membership in the European Union enriches and expands the spheres of cooperation between the two countries in addition to bilateral relations.

During her visit to Tehran, Deputy Minister Petrova held a protocol meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian to discuss current regional and international issues and confirmed an invitation to Minister Genchovska for an official visit to Iran.

Deputy Minister Petrova expressed satisfaction with her trip to a country with centuries-old civilization and culture and announced the readiness of our country to take concrete steps to reach the level of relations with Iran close to that before the COVID-19 pandemic.
