Political consultations between Bulgaria and Iran

Development of bilateral relations between Bulgaria and Iran was discussed in the framework of political consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria and Iran. They were held between the Deputy Ministers of the two countries, Georg Georgiev and Dr. Abbas Aragchi. The regular Bulgarian-Iranian political dialogue is regulated by the 1994 Protocol on Cooperation.

As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, the talks took place via video conference. Deputy Minister Georgiev expressed his satisfaction with the opportunity to exchange views on important bilateral and international issues. Despite the global challenges of the last year, he noted the "good performance in bilateral trade". "We have good cooperation in sports, with our taekwondo team training in Iran at the moment", Deputy Minister Georgiev said.

He highlighted other opportunities for developing relations, including areas that are among the most affected by the pandemic, namely culture and tourism.

The two countries assessed the exchange between the parliaments in Bulgaria and Iran as very useful, in particular through the friendship groups.

Dr. Abbas Aragchi emphasized the good name that Bulgaria enjoys in Iran and in particular among the business community. According to him, tourism is an important area for development. He highlighted the potential for development of economic relations.

The two deputy ministers also highlighted the positive role played by the active ambassadors in Sofia and Tehran, respectively, in achieving growth in the various sectors.

The Deputy Foreign Ministers of Bulgaria and Iran discussed other topical issues on the international agenda, including the future of the Joint Comprehensive Action Plan on Iran's nuclear program and cooperation within international organizations.
