What Bulgarian citizens need to know about seasonal work in other EU member states

06 June 2013

At the beginning of the summer season, a period in which large groups of Bulgarian citizens travel abroad with the goal of securing temporary employment in seasonal work, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issues a reminder that:

Bulgarian citizens intending to travel for seasonal work in member states of the EU should be aware that in several of them, to undertake this work it is necessary to hold a special work permit and a labour contract.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly recommends that Bulgarian citizens wishing to travel abroad for seasonal work, carefully consider the proposals for such work that they receive, and check the legitimacy of the intermediary and the employer. Unpleasant incidents in recent years have shown that what has been promised in oral agreements with illegitimate “intermediaries” regarding working conditions and pay for seasonal work abroad differ dramatically with reality.

Every Bulgarian citizen who decides to travel abroad with the goal of securing temporary employment in seasonal work, should be sure that they have sufficient funds available for the period of residence and most of all,  to return to Bulgaria. The protection that the country gives to Bulgarian citizens abroad does not include free and gratuitous insurance to return to Bulgaria.

Bulgarian diplomatic and consular representations abroad can assist with the provision of funds for the maintenance or the return to Bulgaria of Bulgarian citizens only if their relatives or friends deposit the required amount with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
