The problem with Bulgarian members of the crew of the vessel the Ocean Star Pacific has been resolved

26 July 2012

There are 25 Bulgarian marine specialists among the crew of the Panamanian-flagged passenger ship the Ocean Star Pacific which is docked in the Mexican port of Matsatlan. They had declared a strike because their salaries for the months of May and June had been delayed. With the assistance of the Foreign Ministry, in co-operation with the Maritime Administration Executive Agency and the International Transport Workers’ Federation, all Bulgarian marine specialists aboard the ship who want to return to Bulgaria have been guaranteed passage home at the expense of the shipowner, as well as the payment of their outstanding salaries.
So far, two of the Bulgarian crew have returned. A further 14 people have been paid their wages and if they wish to return to Bulgaria, their travel expenses will be paid by the shipowner. At this stage, nine Bulgarians wished to remain on the ship.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is in continuous contact with the relevant maritime authorities and is ready to provide any assistance necessary.
