Position of Prime Minister of the Republic of Bulgaria Plamen Oresharski on signing the agreement to end the political crisis in Ukraine

21 February 2014 News

Bulgaria welcomes the agreement signed today in Kiev between President Viktor Yanukovych and opposition leaders to end the political crisis.

We consider the agreement, which provides for an early presidential election, forming a coalition government and constitutional reform, as a necessary compromise, which opens the way to political dialogue in Ukraine.

The implementation of the agreement is of particular importance and, in this sense, we assess the law adopted today by  Verkhovna Rada to return to the Constitution of 2004 as a first step in this direction.

Bulgaria strongly condemns the acts of violence in Kiev that have led to dozens of casualties and many wounded in recent days. No circumstances can justify repression and violence.

In the current context of sharp confrontation between part of the opposition and the government in Ukraine that led to a fierce escalation and violence, we deem necessary that the government show maximum restraint and opposition leaders distance themselves from those who resort to radical actions and use of force.

We emphasize  the contribution of the European Union in reaching an agreement and we expect Ukraine to get on the path to reforms, which will ensure a stable and democratic future for Ukrainian citizens.

We hope for the timely implementation of the agreement to investigate, jointly with the Council of Europe, all committed acts of violence.

Bulgaria has always supported the European perspective of Ukraine and deepening the country’s relations with the EU.

Ukrainian people can count on Bulgaria’s continued support for the implementation of the process of reforms, to ensure a stable and democratic future for the country.
