In the field of economic and social policy the main focus is on the efforts to stabilize the European economy and to achieve sustainable growth. The most significant, along with the fiscal consolidation,  are the policies in support of employment and those promoting innovation and increasing productivity.

As regards the development of the Economic and Monetary Union, the European Council will focus on strengthening the economic policy coordination in the euro zone, which will contribute to the detection and correction of economic imbalances at an early stage.
