Today at the Foreign Affairs Council, Minister Nickolay Mladenov put forward the issue of necessary coordinated actions of the member states in situations similar to the one in Egypt. He advised for the prompt preparation of clear rules for all EU states.

"The EU is in support of the democratic demands of young Egyptians who marched the streets and urged authorities to ensure a smooth transition to change," said Mladenov. He added that there should not be any compromise with the security of the people of Egypt and the region. EU foreign ministers called for the release of detained journalists and for the undisrupted access to internet. "We are witnessing the biggest transformation of a region close to Europe", said Nickolay Mladenov.
The Bulgarian Foreign Minister also commented on the General Affairs Council, which had approved the conclusions to be offered to the EU leaders in a few days. In reference to Energy, the Commission has been proposed to continue its support for the development of strategic European corridors, with particular emphasis on South Corridor. Important topics on the agenda were also the connection of natural gas transmission systems, integration of the energy market, and the mutual financing of key energy projects.
The accession of Bulgaria and Romania in Schengen was indicated as preceding during the formal presentation of the Hungarian priorities. Minister Mladenov confirmed that Bulgaria will have fulfilled all technical criteria by March this year, while hopes are that the decision on accession will be made by the summer.
