Participation of the Bulgarian Minister of Foreign Affairs in a side event within the General Debate of the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly on ‘Advancing the Role of Women in Peace and Security: the way forward’
25 September 2024 NewsForeign Minister Ivan Kondov participated today in a side event within the framework of the General Debate of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly on the role of women in peace and security. The event was hosted by the 2024 Leadership Quartet of the Network, including the United States, Romania, Switzerland and South Africa, in collaboration with UN Women.
In his statement Ivan Kondov stressed that Bulgaria gives priority to the full and meaningful participation of women in peace negotiations and conflict resolution processes, while remaining focused on ensuring that women's voices are at the core of peacebuilding efforts.
He also said that Bulgaria will continue to use multilateral platforms to advocate for stronger global commitments to the women, peace and security agenda.
The adoption of UNSCR 1325 (2000) on Women, Peace and Security (WPS) announced the commitment of governments to fully recognize and support the full, equal and meaningful role that women play in the prevention and resolution of armed conflict, in peacebuilding and peacekeeping, in post-conflict reconstruction and humanitarian response, and in all efforts to maintain and promote peace and security at the local, national and international levels. More than half of UN Member States have adopted National Action Plans (NAPs) on Women, Peace and Security. As of August 2024, 87% of countries in the WPS Focal Point Network have adopted such plans, which outline key commitments to participation, protection, prevention, assistance and recovery.
