Progress in action against climate change is one of the most urgent tasks, said Deputy Minister Nevyana Miteva

27 July 2024 News

Advancing action on climate change is one of the most urgent tasks of our time. The goals of the Paris Agreement on climate change can only be achieved if the world moves quickly towards clean energy and sustainable development. This was stated by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nevyana Miteva at the official opening of the 61st session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) at the United Nations (UN), which is attended by 500 delegates from 195 countries, part of the IPCC.

The role of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) of the United Nations (UN) is that of a trusted provider of scientific information that governments at all levels can use to develop climate policy. The reports of the panels are a key contribution to the international climate change negotiations, underlining the importance and relevance of the discussions that will take place over the next seven days, Miteva said.

The climate crisis is not only one of the most severe challenges we face, but it also affects and amplifies all other economic and social problems, Deputy Minister Miteva said. She noted that 22 July was the hottest day on record and it was a global record.

Bulgaria is part of a global trend of adverse weather events such as periods of drought, unusually hot weather followed by devastating storms and floods. As the latest IPCC assessment report makes clear, global warming is linked to human activities and greenhouse gas emissions, she said.

‘For our actions to be effective, we must base them on clear scientific facts and findings. Here we will rely on your efforts at the IPCC. That is why the findings of your reports are so valuable and their messages need to be spoken loud and clear. I wish fruitful and productive discussions and a successful 61st session of the IPCC’, Miteva said.
