Deputy Minister Irena Dimitrova appointed National Coordinator for Combating Anti-Semitism

02 August 2023 News

Ms Maria Gabriel, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, appointed Deputy Minister Irena Dimitrova as the new National Coordinator for Combating Anti-Semitism.

The post of national coordinator for the fight against anti-Semitism is a reflection of the commitments and efforts that the Republic of Bulgaria is undertaking in the fight against anti-Semitism and is a testimony to the priority nature of the issue within the Bulgarian foreign policy. The post was created by Council of Ministers Decision No 633 in October 2017, and in November 2022, pursuant to Council of Ministers Decision No 874, the post of National Coordinator was institutionalized as Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, increasing its visibility and creating additional conditions for policy continuity on the issue.

The main role of the National Coordinator is both to achieve coherence in the fight against anti-Semitism and to maintain active contacts with the National Coordinators of the EU Member States and cooperation on the issue with relevant international organisations, including the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance. Countering discrimination, including manifestations of anti-Semitism, is a priority for the Republic of Bulgaria, and the country continues to be engaged in the issue both in the field of multilateral diplomacy and bilateral cooperation.
