Bulgaria participates in Jeddah consultations on basic principles for peace

06 August 2023 News

The road to peace in Ukraine lies in restoring respect for the UN Charter and international law. This was the conclusion reached by the parties participating in the consultations on basic principles for peace held in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, at the level of national security advisers and political advisers. The meeting is a follow-up to previous discussions in the G7, EU, Ukraine and partner countries format held in Hiroshima (19—21 May 2023) and Copenhagen (24 June 2023).

Bulgaria participates for the first time in this format both virtually and on site in Jeddah. Our country's inclusion is a recognition of the government's clear and consistent policy of supporting Ukraine's independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders, as well as its irrevocable commitment to seeking a peaceful solution to the unprovoked war launched by Russia against the people of Ukraine.

From the Bulgarian side it was stressed that the widest possible international cooperation is a necessary prerequisite for the cessation of hostilities, as well as for the prevention of stagnation of the conflict to the detriment of international law, international and regional security. Our country is ready to work actively within the framework of the Peace Formula.

Bulgaria condemns Moscow's decision to pull out of the so-called Grain deal, using food security and food supply as a weapon to achieve imperial ambitions. The targeted destruction of civilian infrastructure, including port facilities along the Danube, poses a serious risk of escalation in the region. The entry of Russian warships into the exclusive economic zone of Black Sea countries, including Bulgaria's, and the declaration of warning areas in them, dangerous for shipping, is unacceptable and harms the economic and financial interests of our country and Bulgarian citizens.

Bulgaria remains engaged in various options to assist Ukrainian grain exports, including through its territory, as well as in providing additional material and technical assistance to Kiev, including in areas such as energy system reconstruction and environmental security.
