A meeting of the Interagency Council on the Participation of the Republic of Bulgaria in NATO and EU CSDP was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Today, June 7, 2022, an operational meeting of the Interagency Council on the Participation of the Republic of Bulgaria in NATO and EU CSDP (MSUNO) was held under the chairmanship of Minister of Foreign Affairs Teodora Genchovska and with the participation of Minister of Defence Dragomir Zakov, Deputy Chairman of MSUNO. The Deputy Minister of Regional Development and Public Works Yavor Penchev, the Deputy Minister of Energy Danail Nikolov, the Chairpersons of the Foreign Policy Committee and the Committee on the Internal Security and Public Order in the National Assembly - Ventsislava Lyubenova and Atanas Atanasov, as well as the Chairman of the State Commission on Information Security Tsvyatko Georgiev, the Chairman of the State Intelligence Agency Antoan Gechev, the Director of the Defence Intelligence Service Brig. Gen. Venelin Venev, Deputy Chairman of the State Agency for National Security Stanislav Stanchev, Secretary of the Security Council to the Council of Ministers Petar Petrov, Secretary for Foreign Policy of the President Rusi Ivanov, Security and Defense Advisor to the President Stefan Godzevargov took part in the meeting. Representatives of other ministries and departments also took part.

In order to ensure the full implementation of the commitments of the Republic of Bulgaria to the EU, NATO and other international organizations for the contribution of civilian experts in peacekeeping and crisis management missions and operations, MSUNO adopted a decision to establish a permanent “Interagency Working Group for the coordination of the participation of the Republic of Bulgaria in civilian missions and operations of international crisis management organizations outside the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria”.

In the context of the upcoming NATO summit in Madrid (28-30 June 2022), the participants in the format discussed and agreed positions on the wide range of topics on the agenda of the summit as a basis for the framework positions to be adopted by the Council of Ministers and to be presented by the Bulgarian side at the Summit. In light of the serious changes in the geostrategic context after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the meeting in Madrid will have historic significance. Among its main outcomes will be the adoption of a new Strategic Concept, decisions on the long-term adaptation of NATO’s deterrence and defence capabilities, and a review of progress in implementing the decisions of the NATO 2030 Agenda.
