Bulgaria marks 73 years since the founding of NATO

04 April 2022 News

Today marks the 73rd anniversary of NATO's founding.

The North Atlantic Treaty was signed on April 4, 1949 in Washington by 10 European countries (Belgium, Great Britain, Denmark, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, Norway, Portugal, France and the Netherlands) and 2 North American (USA and Canada).

Bulgaria joined the Alliance in 2004.

On the occasion of the 18th anniversary of Bulgaria's accession to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, on April 2, 2022 the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria is pleased to present the newly created column 18 YEARS OF BULGARIA IN NATO, in which you can follow History of the process of Bulgaria's accession to NATO, Archive of documents, where you can find over 1500 declassified files containing information about Bulgaria, as well as numerous meetings between world leaders, status reports of a number of countries in Europe, analyzes of the policy of the USSR, etc.  You can also see the Gallery, in which key moments for our country are captured on tape.

Our freedom, peace and security must not be taken for granted, we must protect and defend them constantly. The current security situation, in which we face the greatest threat to European security since the Second World War, has shown us even more the importance of the Alliance for freedom, security and prosperity of the Member States.

For Bulgaria, joining this union of free and democratic states, ready to collectively defend their security, was not just a strategic foreign policy goal. It was an inspiration and motivation for several generations of Bulgarians, a powerful stimulus for important reforms, for the establishment of democratic values and development.
