Bulgaria was elected a member of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee

25 November 2021 News

Bulgaria was elected a member of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee during the 23rd session of the General Assembly of the States-Parties to the World Heritage Convention, which is currently being held in Paris.

It is the most prestigious body of UNESCO, in which 21 countries participate.

The election of Bulgaria is a recognition of the active work of our country under UNESCO programs in the field of world cultural and natural heritage. This is also a result of the efforts to raise and collect support for the Bulgarian candidacy, for which the National Commission of the Republic of Bulgaria for UNESCO, whose activities are coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and our Embassy in Paris, have a major contribution.

Bulgaria has inscribed in the World Heritage List a total of 10 cultural and natural sites of exceptional value to humanity. These are the Madara Horseman, the Boyana Church, the Kazanlak Tomb, the Old Nessebar, the Rila Monastery, the Rock Churches in Ivanovo, the Thracian Tomb in Sveshtari, the Pirin National Park, the Srebarna Biosphere Reserve and, together with other European countries, elements of the Old Beech Forests in Europe.

In 2022, the National Commission for UNESCO is planning a series of events to mark the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the World Heritage Convention.
