Nickolay Mladenov: “Bulgaria always helps where human tragedy hits…”

08 September 2010 News

“Bulgaria always helps where human tragedy hits; where conflict arises. We are all aware of how important it is to act in solidarity with the flood victims suffering from this unprecedented disaster”, said Foreign Minister Nickolay Mladenov at the opening of the national relief campaign for Pakistan, Bulgaria Helping Pakistan.

The Bulgarian Foreign Ministry and the Bulgarian Red Cross have launched a joint fund-raising campaign to help flood victims in Pakistan. Bulgaria Helping Pakistan seeks to raise emergency humanitarian aid for more than 900,000 people. The latest data indicate that children, alone, with no homes or medical help, total more than 2.5 million. And millions of homes were completely destroyed.

“I ardently hope that the Bulgarian society shows the same sympathy for the Pakistani people, as we had for Haiti,” said Nickolay Mladenov. He also underscored that Pakistan would be one of the main topics to be addressed at the meeting of EU foreign ministers at the end of this week in Brussels.
“Pakistan is far away from Bulgaria, but this is not a reason for us to disregard the disaster there. We are living in a world where distances do not matter much,” said Foreign Minister Nickolay Mladenov.
