Bulgaria to open Consulate in Frankfurt

15 August 2012 News

The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs of Germany today informed the Bulgarian Embassy in Berlin that it has no objection to the opening of a Bulgarian Consulate in Frankfurt including in its jurisdiction the länder of Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland. Once the building has been certified in accordance with the requirements of German law, the date for the opening of the consulate will be announced.

The new consular office in Frankfurt will provide the necessary consular services to all Bulgarian citizens residing temporarily or permanently in the federal states of North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, Hesse, Bremen and the western part of Lower Saxony, and will create an opportunity for Bulgaria to have a more prominent presence in the European financial capital.

Bulgaria has its own five-storey office building in Frankfurt, which until 1990 housed the Bulgarian commercial representative offices of individual foreign companies. There was a Bulgarian Consulate-General in the city from 1925 to 1944, so the opening of the new Consulate means that Bulgaria’s traditional diplomatic presence in this region is being restored.

The highlights of the future work of the Consulate will include significant interaction with the Bulgarian community in this part of Germany. The opening of diplomatic representation multiplies opportunities for developing economic, political and cultural co-operation as well as attracting foreign investment.

Forty-eight countries, including 13 European countries, have consulates-general in Frankfurt.

The city is a financial and transportation hub of Europe. It is the seat of the European Central Bank, the headquarters of all major German banks, and the Frankfurt Securities Exchange - the most significant in Germany and one of the most famous in the world. Frankfurt has one of the largest airports in Europe for passengers and cargo with the related infrastructure. Frankfurt is one of the biggest exhibition centres in Germany, with exhibitions all year round, of well-known makes of cars, industrial goods, services, books and more.
