Energy will be the main theme of the next 30 to 40 years

05 April 2012 News

Methods of energy extraction will be the main topic for the next 30 to 40 years because our resources have declined sharply, Foreign Minister Nickolay Mladenov said in an address to graduating students in International Relations at Sofia University.

Diversification remains important to Bulgaria as a country and we must continue to work on this priority, Minister Mladenov said. He said that the topic of Belene had become politicised and was an example of a misreading of the situation, that some wanted to conjure a dividing line between Bulgaria and Russia. The decision on Belene was taken on the basis of a clear and pragmatic assessment of the opportunities and risks, Mladenov told the students.

The Foreign Minister spoke of some of the main foreign policy priorities of Bulgaria in regard to the Balkans and the Middle East. Our task is to make war impossible in our region, as was done in Europe after World War 2, he said. Minister Mladenov said that European integration was a good instrument and for this reason, Bulgaria’s neighbours had its constructive support on their path to the EU.

You are in university, which was a symbol of change in Bulgaria during the 1990s and so probably understand the scale of events that are currently ongoing in the Middle East, Minister Mladenov told the students. He said that this offered good opportunities for Bulgaria and should be used by the country’s diplomacy.

Minister Mladenov invited the graduates to apply for employment at the MFA through the recruitment procedures periodically announced at the ministry, and he expressed his expectation that new additions would revitalise the system.
