148 Countries Chose Genoveva Tisheva to Become a Member of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women

Genoveva Tisheva was chosen to become a member of the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women. At the vote in New York, 148 countries cast their single-member votes in support of the Bulgarian candidate, ranking Mrs Tisheva fourth out of the twelve people to fill the available seats. 93 votes were needed for joining the Committee. The Bulgarian candidate was chosen following a lot of work on the part of high-ranking MFA officials and all of Bulgaria’s diplomatic representations, which were active in presenting the Bulgarian candidate.

Genoveva Tisheva has a law degree from the University of Sofia, and has specialised in Strasbourg, The Hague and Turin. She speaks four languages. She has published extensively on gender-based violence. Ms Tisheva has many years of experience in the protection of human rights. She took part in drafting the Protection against Domestic Violence Act and the Combating Trafficking in Human Beings Act.
