Minister Zaharieva Receives OECD Secretary-General

28 April 2018 News

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ekaterina Zaharieva discussed Bulgaria’s future membership of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and this country’s efforts to speed up the process with the Organisation’s Secretary-General Angel Gurría.

“For more than ten years now, Bulgaria has been working on its OECD entry, and we have become particularly active after our admission to the EU,” Minister Zaharieva said, stressing the tangible progress as a result of which our country is part of a number of working bodies and has acceded to legal instruments of the Organisation.

The Minister recalled that our country has declared its expectations to be invited without delay to start negotiations on membership. “What is more, as rotating President of the EU Council, Bulgaria not only can help the further enlargement of the OECD but can also contribute to a revival of the process,” she emphasised.

“Bulgaria’s future OECD membership will strengthen our country’s role as a factor in Southeastern Europe and will give the countries of the region an additional impetus to follow our example,” the Minister added.

The guest briefed the Minister on the status of the debate at the OECD on Bulgaria’s membership bid.

“I want all candidates to stand an equal chance,” he assured her.

Gurría is in Bulgaria for an informal meeting of the EU Economic and Financial Affairs Council (Ecofin). Sofia is hosting Ecofin within the framework of the Bulgarian Presidency of the EU Council.
