Italy will fully open its labour market to Bulgarians and Romanians from January 1 2012

29 December 2011 News

Joint statement by Foreign Minister Nickolay Mladenov and Minister of Labour and Social Policy Totyu Mladenov on the abolition of restrictions on access to the Italian labour market to workers from Bulgaria and Romania

We welcome and appreciate the decision by the Government of Italy to completely remove, as of January 1 2012, restrictions on access by Bulgarian and Romanian workers to the Italian labour market.

Italy is the 17th member country of the EU, which, in accordance with the principle of free movement of EU citizens, has terminated restrictive measures on Bulgarian and Romanian nationals to the relevant labour market that were in effect during a transitional period.

The decision complies fully with the positions repeatedly expressed by the main European institutions, the European Commission and European Parliament. We believe that the removal of restrictions will contribute to better functioning of the EU single market.

The decision is an indication of the excellent bilateral relations and well-established strategic partnership between Bulgaria and Italy.
