Deputy Minister Dimitar Tsanchev addresses 100th session of the International Organization for Migration
Bulgaria welcomes the convincing performance of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in its 60 years of work dedicated to the fight against illegal trafficking and illegal migration, Deputy Minister Dimitar Tsanchev said in a speech at the 100th session of the Council of the organization, being held in Geneva.
"Demographic growth and economic inequality, political changes in key regions of the world, natural disasters, climate change and the economic and financial crisis of recent years are the main challenges facing the modern migration policies of individual countries," Deputy Minister Tsanchevsaid.
He highlighted the role of IOM in recent decades in the management of migration processes and expressed Bulgaria’s support for the deepening of co-operation with the United Nations and the EU.
Tsanchev welcomed the decision of the Council that establishes a mechanism for funding of extraordinary migration situations, which will enable the Director General of IOM to make more efficient, flexible and timely decisions in response to a crisis on the scale of those seen in North Africa in the spring of this year.
He emphasised the importance of regional co-operation in the context of managing migration, fighting illegal trafficking and illegal migration.
Deputy Minister Dimitar Tsanchev gave a presentation on the National Strategy on Migration, Asylum and Integration (2011-2020), adopted by the Bulgarian Government in early 2011.
The IOM Council accepted 14 new member states and five observer countries.
