The World is Big and Salvation Lurks Around the Corner

02 December 2011 News

The informal part of the international conference “Sofia Platform: Transitional Justice”, which opens on December 3 at the Sheraton Hotel, began with a screening of a film by famous Bulgarian filmmaker Stefan Komandarev, based on the novel by Iliya Troyanov.

“The world is big and salvation lurks around the corner,” is a line by one of the protagonists in the film, which is set in the 1980s. The world is wide and somewhere salvation lurks – in our home country, in refugee camps, in countries near and far. It may be in the beginning, in the roots, in the genus.

The film forces us to reconsider the past and look with faith into the future. Let's share our own views about what is the role of the spiritual, of intellectuals in a revolution, and especially after a revolution, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Vessela Tcherneva said in an address to participants in “Sofia Platform: Transitional Justice”.

Participating in a lively panel discussion were film director Stefan Komandarev, Tunisian poet Moncef Ouhaibi, young Egyptian journalist and blogger Wael Abbas. The participants agreed on the idea that it is important to recognize and learn from their past. This will enable a more successful transition to democracy in which representatives of the Arab Spring may believe. Facing up to memory, to the legacy and to the truth is the first step, particularly important for young people, so that in the present and future, the worst ways to pursue justice may be avoided.
