09 May 2021 Diplomatic Calendar

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ekaterina Zaharieva is leaving for Brussels, where on May 10, 2021 she will take part in a regular meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council (FAC).

An in-depth discussion on the Western Balkans is planned within the framework of the FAC. Ministers will discuss the future of the region beyond enlargement policy, as well as the economic consequences of the KOVID-19 pandemic in the six countries in the region.

The talks will also focus on transatlantic relations in the context of the EU-US summit scheduled for June 15, 2021. The foreign ministers will discuss prospects for co-operation with the United States in areas of mutual interest, such as tackling the effects of KOVID-19, climate change, trade, security and defense.

The agenda of the meeting also includes an informal video conference with the US President's Special Envoy for Climate Change, John Kerry, with whom the ministers will discuss future joint actions in the field of climate diplomacy.

Current issues on the Foreign Ministry's agenda include the situation in Belarus, growing tensions with Russia, and future actions in support of the peace process in Afghanistan.
