Professor of Sustainability, Curtin University

In January 1991, I commenced my employment as a Lecturer at Murdoch University in the area of innovation having worked previously as an Assistant Professor at the University of National and World Economy in Sofia, Bulgaria. I believe I was the first Bulgarian appointed as an academic at an Australian University.

More than thirty years later, I am a Professor of Sustainability having worked as Head of School at Murdoch University and as Director of the Curtin University Sustainability Policy (CUSP) Institute in Perth, Western Australia. I have more than 360 publications in the areas of sustainability transition and innovation and have also supervised to successful completion more than 70 PhD students. Some of the prestigious journals where I have published include Scientometrics, Sustainability, Journal of Cleaner Production, Journal of Econometrics and Nanotechnology. Two of the books I have edited, namely Impact of Meat Consumption on Health and Environmental Sustainability and Environmental, Health and Business Opportunities in the New Meat Alternatives Market, were awarded World Best Book in the prestigious 22nd and 24th Gourmand Awards. For the period 1991–2021, Scopus lists me as Australia's top author and 23rd in the world in the area of sustainability. I have served for six years as a Panel Member of the Centres of Research Excellence Peer Review Panel, National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), Australian Government. Altmetric ranks three of my papers in the top 5% in the world for the media attention they have received.

During my time in Australia, I have maintained strong links with Bulgaria and Bulgarian universities. I have published 15 papers with colleagues from Bulgaria as well as 3 papers in English on topics related specifically to Bulgaria, such as the 2021 paper entitled “Bulgarian traditional folklore celebrating food and sustainability” (doi: 10.4018/IJISSC.2021070101). While working in Australia I have successfully supervised three PhD students from Bulgaria with whom I have co-authored 23 more papers and who now continue to work as established academics in Australian Universities (Sydney University, University of Western Australia and Curtin University).
