The event was co-organised by the British-Bulgarian Society, SandStone Global, and BBC Studios, who also provided technical support. In his introductory remarks Mr Cassian Harrison, Senior Vice President at BBC Studios, pointed out that the Wonders of Bulgaria had been a big highlight of the 2024 global travel content on all BBC global platforms. Until mid-November 2024 the four episodes of the Wonders of Bulgaria had been shown in 120 countries and seen by more than 320 million people.
In his address, Ambassador Tihomir Stoytchev pointed out the importance of events like these for the promotion among the British-speaking audiences of the ancient Bulgarian history, rich traditions and centuries-old culture, which have universal human dimensions. He thanked the authors of the episodes and wished them further success in presenting to the numerous BBC audiences the rich history and cultural heritage of our country.
During the presentation of the series, which took the form of a ’fireside’ interview taken by the well-known TV presenter Qasa Alomat, Prof. Bethany Hughes spoke about her unforgettable experiences in Bulgaria during her filming, more specifically of the Kazanlak Tomb, the Basilica in Plovdiv, the Rose Valley, the Heraclea Sintica excavations, the Varna Archaeological Museum with the world's oldest processed gold on display, the Anastenaria in the village of Kosti, the folklore rituals in the village of Ribnovo, underwater archaeology by the town of Sozopol, the Magura cave, etc. Excerpts of relevant scenes from the episodes were also screened. Prof. Hughes pointed out: "I like the fact that this is a country and a nation that is not just at the crossroads of East and West but has created the culture of East and West. Bulgaria is a very special place ... I will return to make two nice films about Sofia and Plovdiv. This is a new project called "The Greatest Cities on Earth". And how can you not include Bulgaria in it? The importance of Sofia and Plovdiv as cultural centres throughout all these times and different civilisations is great.
