Concert of the Swedish women's choir "Perunika" in the city of Uppsala

18 November 2024 News

On November 16, 2024, the Swedish women's choir "Perunika", performing Bulgarian folk songs, held a concert in the Church of St. Michael in the town of Uppsala. Founded 10 years ago, the ensemble is conducted by the Honorary Consul of Bulgaria in Denmark - the musician Mihail Delchev, who is the founder and conductor of several women's choirs for Bulgarian folklore in Denmark and Sweden.

The concert programme included arrangements of folk songs by famous Bulgarian composers and conductors such as Filip Kutev, Krasimir Kurkchiyski, Ivan Spassov, Georgi Andreev, Nikolay Kaufman and others. The music is performed in Bulgarian language and in different styles reflecting its origins, with lyrics and embellishments highlighting the differences of the ethnographic and folk music areas of Bulgaria.

The richness of rhythms, sound and harmony of Bulgarian folklore brings together 19 singers under the direction of Mikhail Delchev. Perunika has attracted the attention of musicians and music lovers alike, and the choir has been active in concert activities, participating in three consecutive editions of the Stockholm Culture Nights, projects with world-renowned artists such as Marina Abramović, participating in the 20th anniversary of the Global Rhythms program at the University of Miami, USA, and conducting a number of concert tours in Sweden and Denmark, as well as courses and concerts featuring Bulgarian folklore. In June 2017, the choir participated as a guest of honour at the international festival Black Sea Sounds in the town of Baltchik, and on 1 November 2018 in a joint concert with the Bulgarian National Radio Folk Music Orchestra in Studio 1 of the Bulgarian National Radio. On 3 November 2018 in the small basilica in Plovdiv, Perunika also took part in the official programme of the opening of Plovdiv as European Capital of Culture in 2019.

Thanks to Perunika, Bulgarian musical folklore is becoming increasingly popular not only among the Scandinavian, but also among the general musical public worldwide.
