Ambassador Gergana Karadjova met with Elizabeth Spehar, United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Peacebuilding.
Assistant Secretary-General Spehar highly appreciated Bulgaria’s contribution as a member of the Peacebuilding Commission during the period 2022–2023.
Bulgaria has put forward its candidacy for the next term on the Peacebuilding Commission for the period 2028–2029.
During the meeting, Ambassador Karadjova and Elizabeth Spehar discussed the consolidated peacebuilding financing model. The conversation also addressed the new structure within the UN Secretariat on peacebuilding, established in January this year, which brings together several offices under one framework. These offices are engaged in advancing sustainable peace, the rule of law, and effective institutions.
Ambassador Karadjova reaffirmed that, in the context of today’s geopolitical dynamics, Bulgaria will maintain its commitment to multilateralism and continue working to strengthen the political profile of the Peacebuilding Commission and to deepen partnerships for conflict prevention and the establishment of lasting peace.
They also discussed the challenges facing the UN’s peacebuilding efforts in the context of the Organization’s severely constrained resources.
