Meeting of the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Bulgaria to the UN - Ambassador Gergana Karadjova, with Ms. Izumi Nakamitsu, UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs

26 February 2026 News

Ambassador Gergana Karadjova met with Izumi Nakamitsu, United Nations Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, to discuss key priorities on the global disarmament and nonproliferation agenda.

Bulgaria reaffirmed its strong commitment to the UN80 initiative and to enhancing the efficiency of the work of the UN First Committee. Drawing on the experience of its 80th session — during which streamlined procedures proved effective despite financial constraints — Bulgaria supports the exploration of additional practical measures, as well as possible improvements in the work of other bodies within the disarmament architecture, such as the United Nations Disarmament Commission.

With regard to the 11th Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, to be held in 2026 at United Nations Headquarters, Ambassador Karadjova underscored the need for a strong and viable Treaty regime, particularly in the context of heightened nuclear risks. Bulgaria remains committed to working constructively to bridge differences among States Parties and to upholding all three pillars of the Treaty.

Bulgaria continues to consistently support the control of conventional arms and ammunition, as well as the full and effective implementation of key international instruments in this field, including the Arms Trade Treaty and the United Nations Programme of Action on Small Arms and Light Weapons. We welcome the successful adoption of the Global Framework for Through-life Conventional Ammunition Management and look forward to the first Meeting of States in 2027, which will lay a solid foundation for its effective implementation at the national, regional and international levels.

Ambassador Karadjova further emphasized that Bulgaria welcomes the establishment, under the auspices of the United Nations, of a regular multilateral dialogue on the use of information and communications technologies in the context of international security, which will build upon the achievements of the Open-Ended Working Group.

Bulgaria stands ready to continue contributing actively and constructively to the strengthening of international peace and security.
