About us

The Permanent Mission of the Republic of Bulgaria to the United Nations (UN) in New York plays a key role in ensuring the country’s active and effective participation in the work of the world organization and its structures. Through its activities, the Mission contributes to the implementation of the priorities of Bulgarian foreign policy in the context of multilateral cooperation, to strengthening Bulgaria’s role in global processes, and to the country’s contribution to the efforts of the international community in the fields of peace and security, sustainable development, the protection of human rights, the rule of law, and international law.

Four of the principal organs of the United Nations operate at UN Headquarters in New York: the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), and the Secretariat. Alongside them, a number of specialized programs, funds, and agencies function within the UN system, including the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). In this environment, the Permanent Mission safeguards Bulgaria’s interests and ensures its full and effective participation in the discussions, negotiations, and decisions undertaken within the framework of the world organization.

The Permanent Mission is focused on active participation in the sessions and processes of the General Assembly and its six main committees. The Mission monitors and takes part in discussions on issues related to international security and disarmament, sustainable economic development, climate and environmental protection, human rights, humanitarian affairs, budgetary and administrative policies, as well as matters of international law. Through its engagement in these processes, the Bulgarian delegation defends national interests, presents positions on key issues, and contributes to the achievement of balanced and constructive solutions.

An important emphasis in the work of the Permanent Mission is its participation in UN reform processes, including initiatives aimed at improving the organization’s effectiveness, strengthening global resilience, and reinforcing multilateralism. Bulgaria actively supports efforts to adapt the UN system to the new challenges of the international environment—climate change, technological risks, socio-economic inequalities, and the growing number of humanitarian crises.

The Mission monitors developments in major international conflicts and crises and ensures the timely provision of information to the competent national authorities regarding their impact on global security, international law, and the humanitarian situation. Particular attention is paid to issues related to regional security, migration, and questions of international responsibility.

Within the framework of its participation in the UN system, Bulgaria continues to pursue an active policy of seeking election to responsible positions in the organization’s elective bodies. In parallel, Bulgaria implements a targeted policy to prepare for and secure support for future candidacies to elective bodies within the UN system.

The activities of the Permanent Mission in New York are of key importance for maintaining Bulgaria’s active and consistent presence within the UN system. Through its day-to-day work, it contributes to strengthening the country’s standing as a reliable and responsible member of the international community that supports efforts for peace, security, human dignity, and sustainable development.
