The Mayor of Ottawa announced by proclamation May 24 as Bulgarian Cultural Heritage Day in the Canadian capital

20 May 2026 News

For the third consecutive year, Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe has proclaimed May 24 as Bulgarian Cultural Heritage Day in the Canadian capital.

The proclamation was made possible thanks to the initiative and efforts of the Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria in Ottawa, with the support of the Bulgarian Community of the National Capital Region Ottawa-Gatineau. Traditionally, the document is distributed among the Bulgarian community in the Canadian capital on the day of the celebration.

The proclamation notes that May 24 is the Day of the Holy Brothers Cyril and Methodius and the creation in the 9th century of the Bulgarian alphabet, Bulgarian culture, education and Slavic literature. It also points out that the first Bulgarians came to Canada at the beginning of the 20th century and provided valuable contribution to the development of Canadian society.

The adopted document proclaims the celebration of the rich cultural heritage embedded in the Bulgarian alphabet, the first Cyrillic alphabet, an enduring symbol of cultural and linguistic diversity.
