On the occasion of the National Day of the Republic of Bulgaria, a ceremonial reception was held dedicated to March 3 – the day on which we pay tribute to freedom and the restoration of Bulgarian statehood. The building of the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Bulgaria to the UN in New York welcomed a wide circle of diplomats, UN representatives, and officials from the host country.

“For the Bulgarian people, this day symbolizes the rebirth of freedom, hope, and our right to independent development as an equal member of the international community. Today stands as a symbol of the indomitable Bulgarian spirit, the resilience of our will, and the ongoing struggle for freedom,” emphasized Ambassador Gergana Karadjova in her address.

The Permanent Representative of Bulgaria to the UN highlighted the contribution of the heroes of the Bulgarian national liberation movement – the immortal legacy of Vasil Levski, Georgi Rakovski, Georgi Benkovski, Lyuben Karavelov, and Zachari Stoyanov.

“Today, we also express our gratitude to the statesmen and military leaders whose decisions and actions contributed to the restoration of Bulgarian statehood. The war of 1877–1878 was the culmination of the long struggle of Bulgarians for cultural, religious, and political independence, made possible through the power of international solidarity,” the Ambassador stated.

Ambassador Karadjova emphasized in her speech that together we honor not only a historic event, but also the strength of a nation that has preserved its identity, culture, and spirituality despite the trials of time. She added that independence and freedom never come as a gift or without cost, and they should never be taken for granted.

“Freedom, won through sacrifice and determination, is the foundation upon which Bulgaria builds its present – as a democratic state governed by the rule of law and open to the world. Bulgaria is a proud European nation, fully integrated into the heart of the EU, including the Eurozone and the Schengen area, looking confidently toward the future and defending the right to free choice in today’s complex world,” Ambassador Karadjova added.

The Bulgarian Permanent Representative to the UN concluded her address with a call to look confidently toward the future – with responsibility, determination, and readiness to work together for a more peaceful and just world – closing with the words, “Long live Bulgaria!”
