As part of Bulgaria’s chairmanship this month, Ambassador Gergana Karadjova hosted the Group’s final working meeting.
The UN Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications, Ms. Melissa Fleming, was a special guest at the meeting.
Participants discussed how the UN Global Communications Strategy can support the priorities of the Secretary-General and the President of the General Assembly, as well as efforts to counter disinformation and to build societies resilient to misleading and manipulative content.
Emphasis was placed on the need for UN communication to be clear, accessible, and people-centered, whether addressing crises or highlighting successes. In this context, the importance of constructive journalism was underlined, focusing on three key questions: what is happening, when it is happening, and what comes next.
A key conclusion of the discussion was that the United Nations remains a relevant organization with a vision for the future; however, in order to maintain its role, it must become closer to, more understandable, and more appealing to young people.
