On December 15 Bulgaria participated in the UN Security Council Open Debate "Leadership for Peace" dedicated to the upcoming selection process of the UN Secretary-General and the strengthening of the multilateralism.
In her statement, Ambassador Gergana Karadjova, Permanent Representative of Bulgaria to the United Nations, highlighted the important responsibility UN Member States have in the selection process and called for the nomination of candidates who meet the highest standards of political and moral integrity, have a clear and bold vision for advancing the international cooperation and resolve to bring to the attention of the Security Council issues that may pose a threat to international peace and security.
Ambassador Karadjova emphasized that these qualities are possessed by both women and men and encouraged the nomination of women candidates. She expressed the expectation that women candidates will be given very serious consideration in the search for the best candidate. She pointed out that, to date, out of the five regional groups of the UN, only a candidate from the Eastern European regional group had not been selected for the position of the UN Secretary-General.
The debate is one of the signature events of Slovenia's Presidency of the Security Council in December this year and is a continuation of the ministerial-level debate of the topic “Leadership for Peace” organized by Slovenia in September 2024.
