Head of Mission

Ambassador Dragomir Zakov was born on July 24th 1975 in Sofia. He is fluent in English, French and Russian.

He is married to Marina Zakova and the family has two children.

Mr Dragomir Zakov graduated from the French Language Lyceum in Sofia. He holds a Master degree on International Business from the University of National and World Economy. There are a number of specializations in international security, including at the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the European Security and Defence College. He also holds a diploma in personal finance management.

Ambassador Zakov started working at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2002. He held numerous positions in Sofia and in Bulgarian diplomatic mission abroad as a diplomat at the Permanent Delegation of the Republic of Bulgaria to NATO (2004-2008), the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Bulgaria to the United Nations, and other international organizations in Geneva (2011-2014).

Dragomir Zakov went consecutively through all diplomatic ranks from Attaché to Ambassador. He also held a number of leadership positions, from Head of the Arms Control Department (2014-2016), Director of the Security Policy Directorate (2016-2019) to Head of Mission (Permanent Representative to NATO – 2019-2022). He was a member of the Career Committee at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Chair of the Disciplinary Council.

On March 1st 2022, Dragomir Zakov was elected as Minister of Defence with the support of 184 member in favour, 33 abstentions and none against. He holds this position until August 2th 2022.

In the period from August 2022 to June 2024, Dragomir Zakov was successively Ambassador at Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Security in the Euro-Atlantic area. He held the position of Foreign and Security Policy Advisor to the Prime Minister of the Republic of Bulgaria, as well as acting Director General for Bilateral Relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During the last more than 22 years in the diplomatic service of the Republic of Bulgaria, Mr. Zakov gained extensive experience in topics such as international and regional security, defence, humanitarian issues, public diplomacy, crisis management, protocol.

By Decree No. 148/09.05.2024, he was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Bulgaria to the Kingdom of Denmark. He holds the position from June 24th 2024 and presented credentials to His Majesty King Frederik X on September 19th, 2024.
