19 February 2026 News

Members of the Bulgarian community, alongside pupils from Bulgarian schools in Brussels, their parents, and teachers, gathered to pay tribute to Levski’s enduring contribution to Bulgaria’s struggle for freedom and national awakening.

As a sign of respect and remembrance, floral tributes were laid at the bas-relief of Vasil Levski, located on the building of the Consular Section of the Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria in Brussels.

The ceremony was opened with an address by Her Excellency Ms. Natalia Uzunova, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Bulgaria to the Kingdom of Belgium. In her remarks, Ambassador Uzunova emphasized that the self-sacrifice of Vasil Levski serves as a reminder that freedom is not granted but earned, and that each generation bears responsibility for its preservation and consolidation. She noted that his moral example should continue to inspire collective responsibility and guide efforts toward a stable and prosperous Bulgaria as part of a strong and united Europe.

The program included contributions by students from the Bulgarian schools in Brussels, “Peyo Yavorov” and “Ran Bosilek.” School representatives highlighted the significant role of Bulgarian schools abroad in preserving historical memory, national identity, and cultural heritage among the Bulgarian diaspora.

Through this commemorative ceremony, the Bulgarian community in Brussels once again reaffirmed its respect for the legacy of Vasil Levski and its commitment to upholding the values of freedom, justice, and civic responsibility that he represents.
