Cultural event at the embassy dedicated to the celebration of Baba Marta

02 March 2026 News

On 2 March 2026, at the initiative of Ambassador Nikola Nikolov, a cultural event celebrating Baba Marta was held at the 131 Peyo Yavorov School. The event was also attended by the Romanian Ambassador, H.E. Cornel Ionescu, and the Serbian Ambassador, H.E. Tatiana Panayotovich-Cvetkovich.

Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador Nikola Nikolov presented the symbolism and significance of the martenitsa. According to popular belief, he noted, red signifies the power of the sun and vitality, while white represents purity, innocence and joy. In Bulgarian tradition, white also signifies beauty, while red represents health, love, courage, victory and life itself. Since ancient times, the martenitsa has symbolised health, happiness, and longevity for our people.

Students from the 131 Peyo Yavorov School made martenitsas, which will be presented to guests at the reception celebrating the National Day of the Republic of Bulgaria on 3 March.

The ambassadors of Romania and Serbia shared their thoughts on the cultural event, which concluded with a discussion with the school management and a small cocktail party.
