29 May 2026 News

Ambassador Gergana Karadjova became the third ambassador from a European Union Member State to participate in New York City Mayor’s “NYC Junior Ambassadors” initiative.

The initiative, launched by the Mayor of New York City, aims to introduce students to the principles of global citizenship, diplomacy, international cooperation, and the role of the United Nations, as well as to provide insight into the work of UN Member States during the previous and current year. During the nearly two-hour meeting, students had the opportunity to engage directly with ambassadors and ask questions freely.

During her visit to Harlem Village Academy, Ambassador Karadjova encouraged the 7th and 8th grade students to prioritize learning about the history of UN Member States and the study of foreign languages. Ambassador Karadjova also introduced the students to the history of the Bulgarian alphabet and Bulgaria’s priorities at the United Nations for this year.

“I gladly accepted the invitation to be here today. At your age, it is important to gain a deeper understanding of the work of diplomacy and multilateral cooperation, as well as the principles of international law, so that you may pursue your education with ambition and strong motivation,” said Bulgaria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations at the opening of the discussion.

“Bulgaria remains committed to promoting education, dialogue, and youth engagement as important foundations for building a more peaceful, connected, and cooperative international community,” Ambassador Karadjova told the students, adding: “Each of you has the opportunity not only to dream freely and boldly, but also to achieve anything anywhere in the world. You already possess the most important resources — motivation and discipline!”

At the conclusion of the meeting, Ambassador Karadjova encouraged the students to remain curious, active, and confident in their own abilities, emphasizing that young people have a key role in building a more just and peaceful world. She urged the students never to underestimate the power of knowledge, perseverance, and kindness, as these are the foundations of successful leadership and international understanding.
