Bulgaria Marks 70 Years of UN Membership at High-Level Event on the Future of Multilateralism

15 December 2025 News

Bulgaria, together with 15 other UN Member States, co-hosted the high-level event “Celebrating 80 Years of the United Nations: Revitalizing Multilateralism in a Changing World” as part of the commemoration of its 70th anniversary as a UN Member State. The meeting gathered Member States, UN leaders, and stakeholders to reflect on the achievements and shortcomings of the multilateral system and to consider priorities for strengthening global governance in the context of both the UN’s 80th anniversary and Bulgaria’s own milestone year. Bulgaria was represented by its Permanent Representative to the UN, H.E. Ambassador Gergana Karadjova.

Since joining the UN in 1955, Bulgaria has been an active and constructive participant in multilateral diplomacy, contributing to peace, human rights, and sustainable development. Over the decades, Bulgaria has held prominent positions—including serving as President of the UN General Assembly, as President of ECOSOC, three times as Member of the UN Security Counci and has held leadership positions within UN and specialized agencies such as UNESCO and the IMF. These roles reflect the country’s long-standing commitment to effective multilateralism and its readiness to advance collective solutions to global challenges.

In its intervention, Bulgaria stressed that its 70th anniversary is not only a moment of commemoration but also a reaffirmation of its enduring belief in the importance of a rules-based international order. It was emphasized that the UN80 process offers a unique opportunity to pursue meaningful reform, strengthen the Organization’s effectiveness, and rebuild trust among Member States. Bulgaria also highlighted the need for inclusive multilateralism and for harnessing emerging technologies—particularly artificial intelligence—to advance sustainable development while upholding human rights for all.

Bulgaria will continue to engage actively across UN platforms and initiatives to support a more effective, more inclusive, and more responsive United Nations.
